How would you feel about being an occupant in the San Francisco City Hall after the renovation?

There is pity for the community when any disaster happens to a historic structure but after the renovation a done, a great appreciation for restoration and new beauty. With a new comprehensive renovation including HVAC, electrical, communication networks, replacement of lighting systems and materials, I would consider being an occupant.

What type of lighting was discussed? How could these fixtures be used for Chatham County?

Just about every lighting type was discussed which is used in commercial environments. Including industry standards such as, indirect lighting, recessed indirect, light control systems, pendants, as well as day-lighting and many other. I have an opportunity with in my design to include the majority of them. Although day-lighting is highly considered within all of the space of my plan.

What seem to be the largest dissatisfaction with the office type and how may it affect the design of Chatham City Hall?

Open office plan seem to be a good modern idea but much too contrary observation, noise levels were problematic. Considerations to deter noise sensitivity were screen height, degree of enclosure absorption, speech masking, and distance between workstations.

Is the Courthouse appropriate for a dominate day-lighting systems?

Absolutely it is. Because this historical structure is to maintained, this created an adverse effect on the amount of directional light on the first floor. Although existing window bring in a fair amount of light directing that light will be key.

What are the benefits of day lighting? Explain?

The impact of day lighting helps the user with a wide range of emotions; feeling alert, confident, and friendly. Scientifically, day-lighting has been proven to help with Vitamins D level and the circadian rhythm is optimized solving the effects of fatigue.

Do codes matter for lighting design?

Absolutely codes matter. Lighting is specified based on specific types of ballast, UL ratings, and light levels needed for special spaces and tasks.

Is lighting subjective or objective?

Lighting is subjective. The significance of light impacts the psychological moods of an individual so stated in the readings.

How does the information from the articles apply to the programming document?

Including the information in the programming document allows me to follow through on decisions made based on my concept and re-examine each aspect of my design. Lighting effects, psychological effects of color, and acoustical environment study directly relate to the users of my designs and understanding humans will interact with in the spaces, are the reason for design.

Does Cooper lighting make incandescent lighting?

Yes, thirteen different products that can be used to enhance any design.

An Orchestra: means “a dancing place”

An ensemble organized to create harmony and synchronization in a hierarchical manner. Parts of whole work individually, yet producing a balance of symphonic rhythm. Subdivided into roles and layered authority each can be symbolic of all the different users for the space in City Hall. Though, all create a different sound, but they conduct a blending of an overall performance that notes a unified community.

Considering an orchestra (a chamber ensemble) as a whole body, instrumental in creating the unified tones and sounds of a symphony. When I think of this concept, I liken it to the hierarchical workings of office setting. Woodwind, brass, strings, percussion, and rhythm are all sections of a modern day orchestra. Every group has a principle that leads the group and is subdivided into roles and layered authority, where the conductor leads the performance. An office setting has a central authority that conducts business by delegating through department and dividing up work among individuals. Synthesizing this process through working together in harmony to bring will allow for a successful working environment.

At a glance: when thinking of the town of Pittsboro, I think of its historic commitment to preserve the integrity of the past and look to the future by renovating the old court house.Valuing their way of life, this town demonstrates a since of community through preservation land, animals, homes, old textile mill, bungalow style homes and now the classical-revival style court house. The courthouse sits center of town, anchoring and blending sidewalk retail shops, small businesses, and municipal building all comprise this small downtown. Considering this community, I thought of " an orchestra," a small ensemble, made of individual instruments to create a unified sound. This reminds me of rhythm, harmony, and unity, word that can define a community.

The semester starts off with a trip to Pittsboro, NC. Our precedent project is in the center of this quint town. We toured the Chatham County Courthouse which burned down in 2010 leaving the exterior to be reconstructed. Our class will use this structure to create the first project of the semester. Using teamwork, we are to create a power point of showing gallery/exhibit precedent images and NC building code regulations. This exercise has proven to be beneficial to ensure the safety of the public as we design the interior of a historic structure.

While most trends like fashion and color, cycles every 8 years universal design is many years in the making, a paradigm shift has been made to focus on Universal Design., Affecting the activities of the human population in every built environment, universal design is providing a standard in which design can not only be asethically pleasing but produce functionality and safety for all persons. Universal Design: the design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design”, Ron Mace, founder and program director of The Center for Universal Design. Though, this is a new way of design thinking, the principles of universal design helps to create a built environment that is usable by everyone. It is good design because it is all inclusive; regardless of disability or need of accessibility and assuring that universal design makes sense for the broadest number of people.

Commercial interiors requires accessible projects that are in compliance with ADA guidelines, technology, and local building codes; thereby accommodating and ensuring that everyone can enjoy using any creatively design building or facility. Interior Designers and those in the design-build industry must also keep in mind that each disabled situation is unique and that while guidelines exist for dealing with various classes of disabilities, design consideration must be tailored to the individual, Kopec, 2009. The Principles of Universal Design as stated by, Kopec and The Center for Universal Design at NCSU, is applied as Equitable Use, Flexibility in Use, Simple and Intuitive Use, Perceptible Information, Tolerance for Error, Low Physical Effort, Size and Space for Approach and Use. These seven principles will identify spatial effects and accommodates people of all ages and abilities. When applying universal design, to the exterior site of a restaurant (eg., sidewalks, security, lighting, parking lot, entrance) must be barrier free as well. Moreover, the interior should be designed to consider the circulation throughout the entire space accessible by and anyone regardless of physical condition. Successful universal design solution incorporate functionality, barrier free circulation, signage and way finding, transitional space solution, stairs, elevators, manageable door knobs and hardware, switches and controls, ramps abdicate lighting for interior and exterior means, even drinking fountains. All these applications and more provide not only a person with disability but someone carrying a heavy load, a parent pushing a stroller, larger aisle and larger spaces of overweight people. Improving the commercial space should be the desire and philosophy of every interior designer by remaining sensitive to each and every environment created. Sensitivity on the part of the designer lies in the full scope of understanding the relationship of designer-user needs-environment. Networking Event

February and March were the months for meeting and greeting, as I attended two IIDA networking events in the triad. A jump start to the varied events scheduled for this semester, I traveled hurriedly to this first meeting at 3:00pm on a Tuesday afternoon. IIDA’s monthly association event was held on February 15, 2011. It was a chance to chat with IIDA members about tips for stronger presentation on their resumes and portfolios. The second networking event I attended was on CEU – “Emerging design standards in flooring,” the event was held on Wednesday, March 16^th from 6 - 8 pm at the Royal House 703 East Mountain St, Kernersville, NC. More than thirty design professionals were there to hear a product demonstration and talk which was presented by Bill Guandolo, Tandus Flooring. This was CEU, (continuing education course) emphasized selecting sustainable products and write smart specs when using hard and soft surface flooring. At the end of the evening, I was the door prize winner. Meeting the most active and local designer in the triad, helped me to see the importance of connecting. Some of the people I will network with for years to come. These events were very worthwhile.

As a group we were able to put together the business card for the partners, graphics, business plan, and brochure. We delegated the tasks and used time manage skills to complete the assignment. It was interesting to see so many different working styles and individual creativity at work.

Accentuating balance

Balance has been defined by the dictionary as composition or placement of elements of design, as figures, forms, or colors, in such a manner as to produce an aesthetically pleasing or harmoniously integrated whole. Anne, a woman poised with standards mother, will enjoy a home designed for her and her daughter. Anne’s two bedroom condo is located on the south-west side of the 16th floor; the design scheme lends itself to feminine, soft and pure finishes yet, balancing the modern and antique furniture pieces. The kitchen is the center of the home where the parts of the whole comes together. Graceful lines of a soft and supple sofa is balanced with assorted wood finishes grounds the living room.

Colors, prints and textures are soft and classic to create a variety of style. A recreate collection of antique perfume bottles with stringed beads hang as a chandelier over the master bed adding feminine charm. Spaces are clean and simple with accentuated uses of wall color. The yoga room is where Anne can balance the days and nights. Light peaks through the expansive windows where the drapes hang floor to ceiling to add warmth and texture. Anne’s grandmothers quilt hangs decidedly over the banquet table as a gesture to home spun comfort.

Expose: looking through a lens

Like light and moving modern objects, John and Ed are justice seekers by day and adventure enthusiasts by night. This couple enjoys the music and the arts while staying active by running triathlons and kayaking down rapid waters. Living in downtown affords John and Ed to stay social through art event and health projects. Though, this couple enjoys all things modern they collect and display antique cameras throughout their spaces. The kitchen is the center of John and Ed’s home open gallery that allow access to the large scale windows framing the interior. Wood, stone, concrete and steel are the materials used to create a sophisticated exposure of modern elements. Textured surfaces, leather upholstered furnishings, and wood finishes all bring together a cohesive mix of style. Like looking through a camera the wide scope of this home is public area that centers and unifies the spaces. Vibrant colors of the wave pictures layer the walls while natural light flood the public spaces. The master suite faces east getting the early morning sun. This condo has its master bathroom studio on the lower level so take advantage of the natural light.

I paired with Rebecca, she was helpful and insightful brings clarity and confirmation on my thoughts through her understanding of my project. a helpful idea was to implement terms such as verticality and associated patterns. by the use of screens I could project color through light. this is what she came up with.

interlinking and interlocking: much like the quilt which requires small piece and is united together by a tiny strand of thread, the untitled artwork of Cavallon's bold blocks of colors are woven through with streams of bordering whites making patterns on canvas. I think at this point I've got my colors; the contrasting and primary tones of blues, reds, rust, cream and whites will balance and connect the Rockford house completely.

inspired by the Eameses quest for modern materials I will use materials such as plastics and molded plywood, linoleum and glass, metal and leather to create a sleek yet warm environment.

today: the Eameses would have been proud to witness the celebration of the "Powers of 10" commemoration. the annual Digital, Arts and Technology Symposium was held this weekend at the Milton Rhodes Center for the Arts in Winston-Salem. Finally, I didn't have to travel far to an event. The infamous "powers of 10" video was shown then commented by three of the employees of Charles and Ray Eames, moderated by our very own Patrick Lucas. very inspirational...I sat and talked with Tina Saragawi and Seth Ruskins who was speaking about light effects.

In class today, a charrette (drafting a solution to a design problem, dictionary.com) was our task. Contemplating Bachelard's book, poetics of space,

" the plan of a house drawn on a reduced scale implies none of the problems that are inherent to a philosophy of the imagination"(149).

This statement is the basis of an exercise to extract and simplify the artwork then strategize a "parti" (the basic scheme or concept of an architectural design, dictionary.com) for the house at 612 Rockford Road. While little time to contemplate was evident, I pressed through to deterimine these sketches. Finding that the artwork speaks of small pieces interwoven through space. Keeping in mind the thoughts of Clark,

"what was new was the glorification of self indulgence. Convenience rather than style, comfort rather than some formal notion of beauty became the hallmarks of a new design".

I believe he is saying that the American public had come from the depression age of the 30's, the post war age of the 40's and now desire more for themselves.The three models manifested, reflects light, color and materials as it weave in and out.

''As we move forward into this next project, we are to analyze the art and artist selected from the Weatherspoon Gallery. Beginning the development process we will use the ranch house at 612 Rockford, designed by Edward Lowenstein in 1959, as our model for a mid century home. Starting from the inside out, art and architecture in the mid-twentieth century used idealistic methods of creation with emphasis on abstraction, simplicity and functionality. When observing Giorgio Cavallon’s untitled piece, I quickly get a sense of emotion and simple truth introduced in his work. Like so many of the artist in the modernist movement, it was a time of breaking away from tradition to spontaneity through an energetic expression of art. Cavallon's artistic development was strongly influenced by Piet Mondrian and Jean Hélion, early modernist, but had been compared to the early color shapes of Matisse. Working with notables such as Hans Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Adolph Gottlieb, Cavallon all considered Abstract Expressionist they painted murals for the Works Progress Administration. along with his contemparies, he also participated in Leo Castelli's seminal “Ninth Street Show” (1951), which brought abstract expressionism, to the foreground of American visual culture. Helping to found the American Abstract Artists group was to seek and foster a public understanding of abstract art by discussing of ideas and to present abstract art to conventional public. This movement of abstract art in America, strongly directed Cavallon’s emphasis in a structural art quality while revealing his artistic presents that seemed to be rooted in the country in which he was born, Italy. His composition, organized by irregular rectangles bound by white translucent borders creates a worldly feel while the colors within the spaces, speaks of landscaping through nature. Further characterizing, Poet Frank O'Hara, with whom Cavallon collaborated, described a Cavallon’s painting,

"It resembles a town in southern Italy the walls of which have absorbed the sunlight for centuries and even on a cloudy or raining day give off the intense light of what they have absorbed".

Geometric shapes and color have long been a part of artistic expression but Cavallon’s quiet, abstract compositions are celebrated for their richly textured, painterly forms and ethereal qualities. For the ranch project I see that colors, shapes and forms will guide me through my design work at 612 Rockford. This first step in conceptual development process is giving me an opportunity to see abstract expressionism first hand positioning me with new ideas and material exploration through shapes and forms I never experienced before.

...leading into our next project is this home. A mid century modern house, well perserved and only two owners since its been built. Visiting this wonderful and timeless home was exciting to me. I hope that one day I could look upon my own house in the same way but I hope that it won't take fifty years like the Rockford house.

As a blade of grass grows it serves as strength and beauty -- always under foot and taken for granted, the grass stands strong. Inspired by nature, the bungalow speaks of an era defined by strong geometric elements, by fine crafted furniture, and Japanese inspired designs. This dining room welcomes all of our sensory experiences. Transitive through the objects we see and touch, the chatter and laughter we hear, and catching the aroma of the pot roast we long to taste. Synthesizing this dining room as a blade of grass introduces the relationships between the elements (much like single blade never stands alone), including a customed-designed hutch and an under

the-window counter, just right for hot plates and serving buffets at dinner time.

We socialize around a dining table in a dining room; therefore the experience should a welcomed one. Cohesively, through color and emphasis of line, the furniture balances the room. Zebra wood dining chairs strongly and visibly repeat linear lines while a floral rug grounds the warm hues of the room. Complimentary colors of the wall and furnishings unify the space, while the wallpaper detail reminds the viewer that the dining room represents an intimate space sheltering traditions and memories that can only be opened willingly.

Bachelard said, “for the world is a nest, and an immense power holds the inhabitants of the world in this nest.” This dining room design inspired from a wisp of a grass symbolizing a single unit that impacts how we feel, think, and react through our stored memories.

1949 House Beautiful; a time for mid century living and post war building brought a new economy featuring pages of home decorating ideas, societal trends, glamorous advertisements, black and white shopping guides and featured homes for the distinguished reader. Editors placed emphasis on creating a well-designed and happily run home. Articles with technicolor photographs introduced a new modern home informing readers about caring for the home and gardens. Entertaining guests in the home occupied a central place in advertisements and feature articles. Celebrities endorsed products and often graced the pages of House Beautiful. Companies, such as Tomlinson, Drexel and Honeywell, purchased ads showcasing new building materials, fabrics, rugs, upholstered sofas, accessories, and well-crafted case goods in elegantly designed post war homes. A time for new and improved home products created a continuous stream of advertisements for a monthly product segment entitled, “Window Shopping.” Televisions in the home created an opportunity for family gatherings. Monthly segments of “Decorator Diary” gave decorating advice to the homemaker. Home Plans for building new homes frequent the magazine. In addition, advertisements for becoming a professional decorator all represented this traditional and stylish magazine.

....for an up close and personal view of a 1920's style bungalow, we visited a home that had all the charm of an era gone by. A crisp clean white front to walk up to and enter into a modern take on old value. This warm and comfortable home is a one level with large paned windows, extra thick moldings, french doors and a hearth, reminiscent of the bungalow features. The white walls carried through the house with a splash of color here and there offers a simple but effective color scheme.

We are to observe this home, measure the entire interior which we will provide the homeowner with CAD plans. First on our list of four home type, is the bungalow style and for our upcoming we are to project we are to dimensioned the dining room in 602 giving close attention to furnishings, materials, and structure.

In early twentieth century Scotland, Charles Rennie Mackintosh engaged in a design aesthetic far different from the architecture of Greece and Rome. Advocating that a revival of the Scottish Baronial style, adapted to modern society would meet contemporary needs, he fashioned what after became called Rectilinear Art Nouveau from this Scots tradition. A resident of Glasgow wherein industrialization brought popular and mass goods, Mackintosh took advantage of this consumer market, influenced not only by industrial materials and techniques but also goods from the East. At a time when Japanese art and design increased in popularity,
Mackintosh retained a strong sense for Japanese design, adapting it (much like Wright in the U.S.) to a vernacular tradition in his own home country. Art Nouveau fused with Japanese forms and details held great resonance with others working in the idiom in Austria, Belgium, France, and Spain. The new language that these international practitioners brought to life relied on simple forms and natural materials rather than elaborate and ornamental surfaces and treatments of the Victorian world. The use of texture and light/shadow dominated rather than pattern and ornament, with a focus on the quality of space and an effort to provide calm through forms derived from organic sources. Mackintosh brought innovative ideas and new technology, such as gridded leaded glass to control light and provide interest in window openings. Often contrasting strong right angles and floral-inspired decorative motifs with subtle curves, Mackintosh introduced floral motifs (most often the rose) as an example of the exacting attention paid to detail in every aspect of design. Influenced by his wife Margaret MacDonald, an artist by trade fashioned many of the details in drawing designs and who assisted in decorating the furnishings throughout the interior spaces.

Material & Furnishing:
Nature-inspired furniture graces each room, providing both function and a pleasing aesthetic. Mackintosh designed every piece of furniture, motifs, fireplace, and rugs to create a complete this home. Soft and light curtains, upholstery, and white pastel walls is a strong contrast between the dark mahogany furniture, doors and ceiling beams. Whereas Margaret MacDonald, continued to work with her
husband to offer many design details for motifs and furnishings.

Geometric-shaped lights express strong elements within the rooms. Adjacent from one another, windows and doors with grids filter light in brightening spaces to reflect light and allow it to bounce off
fabrics and furnishings. The system in the home consisted of a coal furnace located on the second floor provides heat for the home, supplemented by fireplaces in several rooms. Mackintosh located convenient built-in bathrooms throughout the home.

Michael Graves

Snyderman House represents the earlier works of Michael Graves.Modernism takes a front seat while Graves nestles a single family home into the environment of Fort Wayne, Indiana. A solitary building with a coordinating system of axes and flat roof, Graves distinguishes geometric cut openings and vertical piers rising three levels, curved balconies and offset the square shaped windows. Stairs, situated in the center of the home, allows users easy acess to the space. Muted pastel colors soften the building into its landscape context. Graves concieved this home much like Corbusier’s five points architecture, incorporating clean lines and curved shapes with a
minimalist eye for detail.

Getting off the ground:

This year in studio, starts out with a study in residential design. Getting to know Patrick and to begin to collaborate with my fellow classmates about design. This studio should allow me to explore and create spaces within a home. Articulating design by exploring surfaces through materials, furnishing, and lighting. A conceptual study of period homes to spaces within a high rise development that will open the door to process work, space planning, organization, and model making. This will help me to build and develop my ability to design.

Reflection
After following through the design phases of Unity Village, I have learned many lessons that I can take into next semester. I enjoyed working on this project because it gave me opportunity to design a space that is has a limited footprint. The amount of space should not limit the skills designers and they don't have to be employed to design mac-mansions. I have learned to work within the space given to me. I considered the family in which I was designing for, incorporating elements of their rich heritage and graphic elements that speaks my concept of conversation.

Our concept used for the first floor of the building in the phase 2 project is continued to the residential space. Because this floor was the main entrance into the building, we used expressive, directional and emotional elements of design.

Conversation: communication and dialogue is the spoken exchange between people of thoughts, opinions and feeling; talk...

This design concept will be followed throughout the my residential unit using the universal language of geometric shapes and lines. Energetic uses of color and texture and architectural details connect spaces together. Curved lines softens hard surfaces, while light creates a bright yet open spaces for users to live in.

Looking at Meghan's strengths I find that they are certainly different from mine.

She relys strongly on her hand rendering skills to convey a drawing. Observing Meghan's drawings demonstrates techniques that are clear and concise. In other words, light and shadow is carried through the image. While reflective is introduced subtly, color is used boldly. Perspective drawings appear to be her specialty. She starts with quick sketches of ideas, then formalizes the drawing using markers. She seems to have a clear understanding of color and the use of texture. I especially enjoy seeing in this image, the hand rendered scale figures not necessarily sketch-up models but what she created from imagery. Its clear that that she thinks through her designs and knows how to convey them through the drawings. Whether she is writing about her work or sketching out a drawing, Meghan's creativity shows that she is cares about her designs....

As I ponder this question, I think of all the things I would like to be; like creative, focused, assertive, and interesting. Although these attributes speak volumes for a designer, I believe what I consider about myself most, is having confidence in my computer skills and the love of making things. These things helps me to put elements together by taking something and making something. What will always make me a good designer is listening and trust my inner self. As I consider the user of a space, I desire to be open minded to their wants or needs and not my own. I focus on what will make a impression and why. By drawing from precedent images I am inspired by elements used in the past and present that could be used in a design. I am confident in my ability. Charging myself to do all that is required of a project even if it cost me time, money and emotions . I am driven to completion.

Group B: Review

Ground Floor: Mud Room. The Mud Room provided sufficient space to move in and out of the building. Allowing residents move freely around the curved walls. The glass walls allotted an open environment to view each side of the room. The ceiling transitions from one level to the next introducing soft colors that make the ground floor of the building inviting to the eye. The community garden is a great idea to expand the space especially since there is a nationwide push for community involvement. It was a great element to have the mud table for residents to use after tilling the garden.

While I like the overall design concept and images of the Mud Room, Lounge, and the Corridor I would suggest a warmer environment with less high polished surfaces. I also found the spaces to be cohesive in the color scheme throughout but I would differentiate between the rooms. The practicality of the Mail Room being on the ground floor was a good idea because it helped to utilize a floor.

Having the Lounge look onto the playground provided parents a way to view their children while still enjoying a moment’s peace. The Lounge is also a great way for resident s to socialize and fellowship with each other and again providing a community and family oriented setting.

First Floor:

The first floor is warm and inviting with plenty of charm mixed with vintage and contemporary design elements. What stands out the most is the design of the Café and the Lounge. Both spaces are used efficiently and created a homelike feeling for residents. I like the different textures, the dark wood, and the accent pieces. The brick wall provided texture throughout. The background and the lighting of renderings embodied an appealing area.

Second Floor:

The slide presentation is well put together with delightful hand drawn renderings. The floor accommodates for the people of the building who will use the space. A multipurpose room and running track are great ideas to involve residents within the bright and airy space. The only consideration for the track area is a width adjustment that allows for two on the track at a time .

Working on our first floor project, inspired me by coming together with team members and creating a unified floor of rooms. I think the outcome was very successful in delivering a concept that speaks throughout the spaces. The design incorporates eye catching signage and graphic details to direct visitors, workers and residents around the building. The rendering took a lot of time, I would have liked to have included background scene that were previously selected. All in all, our focus was to create and design a floor that would be impressive and smart. I think architectural details, colors scheme, movable walls certainly add a sense of continuity by bring the spaces together.

Phase Two Project completed:
Developing a plan and creating a design with Paris was an inspiring experience. We both pocessed the same work ethics and actively worked to finish the project. Design elements like conversational seating, graphic way finding signage, and removable walls show off what we imagined for Unity Village.
